What Is a Float Switch and How Does It Work?

A float switch is a control device that monitors the liquid level in tanks and other containers. It consists of a hollow plastic float that floats on the surface of the liquid. Inside the float is a freely moving steel ball. As the liquid level changes, the angle of the float changes as well, causing the ball to open or close an electrical circuit. This allows the float switch to switch pumps on or off automatically at a predefined liquid level, ensuring safe and efficient operation. Float switches are commonly used with submersible pumps to prevent dry running or to stop tanks and other containers from overflowing.

Different Types of Float Switches
